Flashes of Inspiration

This morning, I had a chat with my dear friend and fellow artist, Julia Martin. She was reminiscing about the artwork she’d created decades ago, still hanging in her home and still bringing her joy. At first, I felt a pang of envy. As a new artist, I thought I didn’t have the luxury of looking back to see my style evolving over time. But then, I had a flashback to what may be my first framed piece.

It wasn’t your typical piece.  I didn’t actually mean for it to be art. You see, it was actually a flashcard I’d made while studying for a high school humanities exam. After I moved out, my mom found it, framed it, and displayed it in her home for years. It turns out, my sister STILL has it. And guess what?  I still love it.

I’ve always been drawn to big, expressive eyes that pull you in. I still prefer simple backgrounds with subtle narrative hints. This flashback reminded me that my style has always been there, quietly developing. It feels like a glimpse of where I’ve been—and a clue to where I might be headed next.

You see the resemblance, right?!

I’m creating the same thing, whether I’m painting or sculpting or organizing an event.

Friends, I’m still all about making connections.

Let me explain.

I adore flash mobs—where everyone’s just going about their day, and then suddenly, one person starts dancing, a few more join in, and before you know it, there’s a full-blown performance. And just as quickly, it’s over, and everyone melts back into the crowd as if nothing happened.

But something did happen. You can see it in the lingering grins on everyone’s faces—dancers and bystanders alike. The joy is contagious. This truth is at the heart of my upcoming “Purple Poppy Project.” There won’t be any intricate choreography, but I am hoping for a ripple of smiles. I’m teaming up with fellow artist Carol Fennell at the Stanley Marketplace in Aurora, Colorado, this Sunday to paint one thousand ceramic poppies. These poppies will be part of an exhibit that promotes hope and celebrates unity and you’re invited to be a part of it. If you’re nearby from 11-4, come paint with me! Who knows, maybe a dance party will break out!

One last thing!

My website just got a refresh, and I’ve uploaded a bunch of new originals, prints, and sculptures.  Take a look here.

Whether it’s reflecting on old pieces or diving into new projects, I’m really grateful that you’re joining me on this journey.  Connecting with you all really does make this whole art thing a heck of a lot more fun.  Thank you for being here.
